Ex-Bosnian leader to head home after court ruling frees him - CNN.com: "London, England (CNN) -- Former Bosnian leader Ejup Ganic will leave London for Sarajevo, Bosnia, on Wednesday, a day after a British court ruled that he not be extradited to Serbia.
Ganic called the extradition request 'a textbook example of abuse,' accusing the Serbian government of trying to 'undermine the judiciary in this country.'
The extradition request was politically motivated, Justice Timothy Workman found in throwing it out."

"No striking or substantial new evidence" was brought against him, the judge ruled.

Ganic, who was arrested at England's Heathrow Airport in March at Serbia's request, is wanted in Serbia for conspiracy to murder in breach of the Geneva Conventions, a spokesman at Britain's Foreign Office said.

Ganic's lawyer, Stephen Gentle, denied that he had any role in the 1992 killings in question. In April, Gentle said that "the extradition request is politically motivated. It is legally flawed, and he has nothing to hide."

Ganic was the vice president of Bosnia during the civil war there between 1992 and 1995 and was twice president of the Bosnian-Croat Federation in the years following the 1995 Dayton peace agreement. Many independent commentators at the time regarded Ganic as a relative moderate in the wartime Bosnian leadership.

Though Bosnian, Ganic was born in Serbia and speaks with a recognizable Serbian accent. He holds dual nationality in the former Yugoslav republics.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Australian Government’s commitment to supporting Indonesia in addressing climate change is being showcased in Jakarta starting on Thursday, the Australian Embassy here said in a media release today.

Australia and Indonesia’s cooperation on climate change, delivered through Australia’s aid program (AusAID), will be on display at the Indonesia Climate Change Education Forum and Expo held at the Jakarta Convention Centre until May 29.

The head of AusAID in Indonesia, Jacqui De Lacy, said Australia is committed to working with Indonesia to help achieve its climate change and development objectives. This commitment also includes working with Indonesia to adapt and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

"Indonesia is home to the third largest area of tropical forest in the world but it also ranks among the world?s highest for deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions," said De Lacy.

"Australia is a proud participant in the global fight to protect and sustainably manage forests, committing A$100 million to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia alone," added De Lacy.

Australia is working with Indonesia to save standing forests, restore those which have been degraded and develop alternative livelihoods for rural communities to reduce unplanned deforestation.

"Indonesia is highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, with real ramifications being felt in low-lying islands and farming communities. Changing weather patterns are creating an increase in droughts and floods. If no action is taken, the situation will only get worse for Indonesians," said De Lacy.

At the Expo, guests will be exposed first-hand to peat lands from Central Kalimantan, herbarium and plants, and children will be educated about the importance of climate change through educational games.

Indonesia's Machinery Imports Reach USD 20 Billion - KOMPAS.com: "JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s import of machinery and mechanical appliances last year reached about US$20 billion or 18.49 percent of its overall non-oil/non-gas imports, Industry Minister MS Hidayat said.

'The import of machinery and mechanical appliances has increased significantly all the time in line with the growth of manufacturing industries in the country,' he said when addressing the opening of a machinery expo on MTT Expo here on Wednesday."

In his address read out by Director General of Manufacturing Industry Basis at the Industry Ministry Panggah Susanto, the minister said a number of machinery producing countries were also main machinery importers. In 2010, the machinery production of the world’s 28 main machinery producing countries rose 21 percent to US$66.3 billion from a year earlier, he said.

China, Germany and Japan were among the biggest consumers of mechanical appliances last year, with a value of US$27.28 billion, US$5.03 billion and US$5.3 billion each. However, Japan and Germany were also the biggest exporters of machinery last year by earning US$7.83 billion and US$6.62 billion respectively, he said.

Germany was also the third biggest importer of mechanical appliances last year with a value of US$1.9 billion after China with US$9.1 billion, and the US with US$2.1 billion, he said.

"By holding the MTT Expo 2011 attended by almost 500 participants from 20 countries such as Britain, the US, Japan, Germany, France, Turkey and China, I hope this expo can bridge industrial development by way of technological transfer to improve the competitive edge of products," he said.

He predicted that Indonesia’s demand for mechanical appliances and metalwork machinery would continue to increase in line with the growth of national industries and economic development under an economic corridor program and acceleration and expansion of Indonesian economic development (MP3EI) scheme.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government expects Indonesia to become one of high income countries in 2025 by developing its potentials particularly in the economic sector.

In its written statement issued on Wednesday, the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs said Indonesia is listed as the world’s 17th biggest economy, with per capita income reaching around US$3,000 in 2010. If every thing goes on as planned, Indonesia will belong to a group of high income countries in 2025, the statement said.

Indonesia is rich in a variety of resources which can be turned into the main engine of the national economy, it said. The statement said Indonesia is in the process of transforming itself from factor-driven economy to efficiency-driven economy.

However, Indonesia’s dream of being one of the world powers will not come true if a wide range of challenges remain unsolved. Among the challenges are a lack of infrastructures, low quality human resources, urbanization and the impact of climate change, it said.

For its part, the government has drawn up a blue print for accelerated economic transformation which must be supported by a number of breakthroughs in formulating short-, medium-and long-term strategies and policies. The planning is put in the master plan for acceleration and expansion of Indonesian economic development (MP3EI) covering 22 main economic activities in the country, the statement said.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is set to launch MP3EI at the Jakarta Convention Center on Friday. As a follow up to the launch of MP3EI, the government will set up a team to be led by the President to implement it.

During the launch of MP3EI, the President will hold a teleconference with the governors of North Sumatra, West Java, East Nusa Tenggara and Papua provinces.
