Indonesian Govt Urged to Pay Serious Attention to Javan Rhino - KOMPAS.com
Indonesian Govt Urged to Pay Serious Attention to Javan Rhino - KOMPAS.com: "SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com - The government should pay serious attention to the survival of the Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) whose population has not increased over the past few years, an environmentalist said.
"The number of Javan Rhinos in the Ujung Kulon national park was around 20-40 heads in 2010," Singky Soewadji said here recently.
He expressed pessimism that the endangered animal’s population could increase in the coming years. "This is because the area of forested land in Indonesia has shrunk and is continuing to shrink."
Many habitats of rare animals had been converted into plantation areas, he said, adding that quite often plantation managers ordered the killings of endangered animals living in the forests. "Such a condition is disadvantageous for Indonesia because many of its rare animals will die.""

"The difference will not be large. (Subsidized fuel consumption) is likely to reach 41 million kiloliters or slightly more until the end of this year," Director General of Oil and Gas at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Evita Legowo said here on Wednesday.
The higher-than-predicted consumption is among others because of difficulties to keep down the abuse of subsidized fuel oil to industries. he also said the Indonesian crude price (ICP) was expected to exceed US$110 per barrel until the end of this year, well above the target of US$95 per barrel set under the revised 2011 state budget.

Indonesia Facing Critical Period in Infrastructure Development - KOMPAS.com
Indonesia Facing Critical Period in Infrastructure Development - KOMPAS.com: "JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The coming three years will be a very critical phase for Indonesia in the development of its infrastructure as it would only have two options, namely developing fast and strategic infrastructures or being trapped in structural and prolonged congestion.
The next three years until 2014 will be crucial for Indonesia’s infrastructure development. However, observers see that the government still has no solid policy in the field that would support the development of its infrastructures.
"The government’s latest policy in this sector such as a master plan for the acceleration and expansion of Indonesia’s economic development (MP3EI) has not yet been prepared well in the field," Suyono Dikun, a professor at the University of Indonesia, said on Thursday.
Failure to develop enough infrastructures in the country will cause congestion in different sectors, not only in the traffic one. "The congestion will happen not only on roads but also on railway tracks, ports, airports, power energy, irrigation, drinking water and others," Suyono said."

Bali Added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List - KOMPAS.com
Bali Added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List - KOMPAS.com: "DENPASAR, KOMPAS.com - Chinese shadow puppetry and Belgian set ritual repertoire, both passed down through the generations were added Saturday to UNESCO’s list of “intangible cultural heritage” of humanity.
Envoys on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali added the two new entries to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity list for 2011. Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theatre acted by colourful silhouette figures made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing and manipulated by puppeteers using rods, UNESCO explained on its website.
Also newly listed is Leuven age set ritual repertoire from Belgium, a rite of passage centring on the ten years leading up to a man’s fiftieth birthday.
More items are expected to be listed when envoys meet again on Sunday. UNESCO has chosen 47 items last year including Indian Chhau dance which enacts episodes from epics including the Mahabharata and Ramayana and human towers built by members of amateur groups named Castells in Spain."

Bridge Collapses in Indonesia; 3 dead, 17 Injured - KOMPAS.com
Bridge Collapses in Indonesia; 3 dead, 17 Injured - KOMPAS.com: "JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — A busy bridge collapsed Saturday in central Indonesia, killing at least three people and injuring 17 others as a bus, cars and motorcycles crashed into the river below, police and witnesses said.
Capt. Syafii Nafsikin said search and rescue teams rushed to the scene. Survivors, swimming to shore, were screaming in panic.
The sprawling, 770-yard (700-meter) bridge — built to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco — linked the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province. It was clogged with traffic when the accident occurred, Syaiful, a witness, told local television station TVOne.
He saw at least one bus and close to a dozen motorcycles plunge into the Mahakam river. Several cars were mangled. "Everyone was screaming," said Syaiful, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.
East Kalimantan police spokesman Col. Antonius Wisnu Sutirta said it wasn't immediately clear why the 10-year-old bridge collapsed. He said at least three people were killed and 17 others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals."

Report on US Soldiers at PT Freeport Denied - KOMPAS.com
Report on US Soldiers at PT Freeport Denied - KOMPAS.com: "JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto has denied a report that 70 US soldiers were working at US gold and copper mining company PT Freeport in Papua.
"On the other hand, there are indeed several military retirees working in Freeport and they were recruited through a process applied to civilians," the minister said in a press conference here on Saturday.
Based on clarification result, several security consultants recruited from security service companies are often used in other countries, he said. That condition is also applied in all Freeport branches or other mining companies in other countries"
